The Realities of Modern Life

The relationships that matter most deserve our attention.  But, unfortunately, in our busy world, sometimes the greatest barrier isn't willingness - it's time.

Our days are filled to the brim. Every day, from the moment we open our eyes, we are greeted with multiple voices clamoring for our attention. The flood of chats, bursting inboxes and overflow of voicemail draw our focus to our devices, taking precious time and attention away from each other.

Many of us are balancing demanding careers, raising young children, caring for aging parents, or navigating challenging life transitions. We care deeply about our relationships. But we struggle to find the time to maintain both our own emotional well-being and our connections with the most important people in our lives.

Just the concept of adding one more regular commitment to our already overburdened schedules feels overwhelming. Pulling the trigger and putting this into motion can feel like a Herculean task. Finding a couple of hours to drive across town in traffic? That can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Making Therapy a Part of Real Life

Telehealth makes it possible to prioritize therapy without asking you to choose between caring for yourself and meeting the demands of everyday. It’s a life that already asks so much of all of us. Being able to come together on a screen makes therapy possible amidst the busy lives that we are all living.

Therapy should support your life, not compete with it. Whether we meet in my office or from the comfort of your home, therapy is ultimately about creating space for thoughtful conversation, reflection and growth. Coming to therapy is a way to hit “refresh,” a way to reconsider, a pathway to renewal. Online therapy provides a simpler way of working that embraces the many other facets of our lives.

Why I Choose To Work Primarily Online

Over time I realized that how therapy fits into people’s lives influences whether they continue with the work. The scenario is all too common. The appointment was set on the calendar. You agreed with your partner to be there. Then a meeting is added to your calendar without your consent. The daycare provider is sick. A child has an extra practice or concert. There’s a new construction project on your route that adds to your commute.

Suddenly that appointment on your calendar is one more thing on a list of many. It’s going to add stress to get there. It doesn’t seem like there’s enough time when you factor in traffic. Maybe therapy already feels daunting. With all that’s going on, this just doesn’t seem like a good week to take that on. It’s then just so easy to call it and say we can’t make this happen right now.

This is where telehealth can make a meaningful difference. The appointment is still reserved time on your calendar. But there’s no drive, no traffic. It’s still a lot on your plate, but it’s more doable. There’s less reason to cancel, to postpone, to avoid.

The reality is that showing up to each appointment and committing your attention to what matters most is part of therapy. Change rarely happens in a single conversation. It happens over time, through returning to difficult topics, noticing patterns, trying something different, and reflecting together. Consistency creates momentum. When therapy fits more naturally into daily life, it becomes easier to keep that momentum going, even during particularly demanding seasons.

Consistency makes a difference. Online therapy is one way I help make that consistency more attainable during the busiest seasons of life. That’s why I believe it’s beneficial to provide online therapy to my clients. I see myself meeting clients where they are in their busy lives.

Does Couples Therapy Work Online?

Many couples wonder whether meaningful therapy can happen through a screen. It's a reasonable question. While there may be some situations where in-person work may be preferable, I've found that online couples therapy can be remarkably effective. What matters most isn't whether we're sharing the same room. It's whether we're coming together consistently, making time to look at where we are.

In my experience, after the first few minutes most couples stop thinking about the technology altogether. The conversation becomes the focus. We laugh together, sit with difficult emotions, notice patterns, and have the same thoughtful discussions we would have if we were sitting in the same room. The screen quickly fades into the background because the relationship between therapist and clients - not the technology - is what matters most.

Relationships improve when we take time and give them our attention. We are all so busy running. The first step to rekindling connection is making the intentional decision to slow down and give your relationship your undivided attention. And then following through with a consistent commitment of time. It’s about slowing down and breathing amidst other the cacophony of demands and responsibilities.

We don’t have to be sitting in the same room to have these kinds of important conversations. Telehealth enables us to come together from the comfort of our own spaces. We can be on our screens and be present. We can set intention, direct our attention, and be in this moment together online.

Why telehealth is helpful for parents

Many of my clients are juggling demanding careers and family responsibilities. As a therapist I hear in their stories the stress of meeting in-office work requirements in addition to getting the actual work done. Laptops are out after dinner to finish tasks. Basic needs, like sleep especially, are compromised on a regular basis. The juggle of daycare and work is a daily runaround for many of my clients. And then, when something happens to upset the carefully constructed routine – an illness, an injury, a reduction in staff, a demanding assignment, work travel – it can “up the ante” in ways that strain the system.

I find no reason to make you drive to my office in Newton on top of everything else you're already carrying. My hope is to remove one unnecessary burden so that therapy feels more manageable and easier to return to consistently. Choosing to work primarily through telehealth is one way I try to honor the realities of the lives my clients are living and make it easier to invest in yourself, your relationships, and your emotional well-being during the seasons when you need that support most.

The relationships that matter most deserve our attention.

Sometimes, making space for that attention is where healing begins.
